ATHENS, Jan 17 (Reuters) - A soccer fan was stabbed to death and another hospitalised after they were attacked following a Greek Cup match between Olympiakos Piraeus and Panathinaikos, police said on Thursday.
The two Olympiakos fans were attacked outside a cafe in Loutsa, a coastal town just outside Athens, by a group of Panathinaikos fans in the early hours of Thursday.
The two men, who had just returned from watching Olympiakos beat Panathinaikos 4-0, were both stabbed in the chest.
The 24-year-old, identified as Theophilos Stavrakis, died in hospital before emergency surgery while 26-year-old Costas Bakandritsas was in a stable condition after an operation, hospital authorities said.
Police said they had arrested three of the attackers and were hunting another, but denied the incident was related to soccer.
"This fight was not about football teams, it was for private reasons," said a police source.
Police also revealed that Stavrakis had been arrested in the northern city of Thessaloniki in 2005 and banned from attending any soccer matches in Greece for two years.
